The Los Angeles City Council finally passed a Density Bonus ordinance on February 20, nearly four years after the State Legislature passed SB 1818 requiring them to do so and after an earlier 12-2 city council vote seemingly had approved it but was overturned by the City Attorney on technical grounds.

LA Mayor Villaraigosa Releases Housing & Community Development Plan

Mayor Villaraigosa recently released his 2008-2012 Housinq and Community Development Five-Year Consolidated Plan and 2008-2009 Program Year 34 Action Plan (CDBG. HOME, ADDI, HOPWA and ESG).

The proposed 2008-2012 Housing and Community Development Consolidated Plan and related 2008-2009 Action Plan budget for Program Year (PY) 34 is scheduled to be enacted April 1 ,2008 and end March 31,2009.

Community and Labor United in Reappointment of CRA's Joan Ling

At a LA City Council meeting on December 19, a unified coalition of labor and housing advocates ensured Joan Ling's reappointment to the Board of the Los Angeles City Community Redevelopment Agency (CRA). The business community had tried to deny Joan a second term because of her persistent efforts to require recipients of CRA funds to provide greater numbers of affordable homes and union jobs.

Now Is The Time To Get Active With Housing Los Angeles!

Housing LA, the board coalition that fought for and won Los Angeles’ Housing Trust Fund, is now working to significantly increase the supply of safe, decent homes that people can afford. Housing LA’s 3-Point-Plan to solve the housing crisis includes building mixed-income neighborhoods where new apartment developments include affordable; continuing efforts to protect apartments and residential hotels from demolition and conversion to condominiums; and urging the city to commit to a long-term, dedicated source of funding for the Housing Trust Fund.

LA Controllers Audit Says Affordable Housing Must Be City's Top Priority

The City of Los Angeles is losing the race to preserve and build enough homes that are affordable for its residents according to a newly released audit of the Los Angeles Housing Department (LAHD) by City Controller Laura Chick.

The audit contains 28 recommendations to help LAHD provide more housing that people can afford, and calls for greater collective energy and political leadership from the city to help solve the housing crisis, which has hit the poor and working class the hardest.

SCANPH and ACORN Intervene to Enforce Mixed Income Housing Requirement in Part of Los Angeles

On June 5, SCANPH and ACORN filed a motion to intervene in a lawsuit brought by a market-rate developer seeking to invalidate and avoid an LA City specific plan area's requirements that certain residential developments within the area either (1) replace any residential units destroyed on the developed parcel, (2) include affordable units as part of the development or (3) pay a fee to be used for affordable housing developmet in the area.
