Chief Financial Officer

Abode Communities (formerly the Los Angeles Communitye Design Center) is seeking an experienced senior executive as its Chief Financial Officer (CFO) to direct the organization’s overall financial and accounting operations; oversees all aspects of human resources, office management and information management; oversees the organization’s portfolio to ensure achievement of financing performance goals and commitment and regulatory compliance; and engages in real estate and syndication transactions on behalf of the organization. This senior management position provides strategic leadership, financial management, asset management, risk management, and productive investment oversight for the organization. The CFO also participates as a key member of the senior management team to formulate and implement the organization’s strategic plan and annual work plan. The CFO has three direct reports, the Controller, Director of Administration and Asset Manager. Specific duties and responsibilities include: 1. Oversees operations of the accounting and finance division, including develop and implement fiscal policies and procedures; maintain effective internal control system; establish, maintain, and monitor corporate as well as limited and general partnership financial records; and ensure that the fiscal practices and procedures comply with legal standards and requirements of investors, lenders, and public and private grantors. 2. Ensure the timely preparation and submission of quarterly financial reports, annual audited financial statements, cost certifications, and tax returns for all limited partnerships and third party clients as well as annual operating budget, monthly budget variance reports, and quarterly and annual financial statements for Abode Communities and its non-profit affiliates. 3. Oversee cash management for the organization; work with the President to ensure that the organization maintains sufficient working capital to meet its operational and real estate development needs; and work with President and Finance Committee of the Board of Directors to establish and maintain sound investment policies for Abode Communities and its limited partnerships. 4. Advise the President and senior management in financial planning that reflects the short- and long-range priorities and goals for the organization; develop budget planning and financial management strategies for the overall organization as well as for the architectural, real estate development, and property management divisions; and provide financial information to assist in sound policy and program decision making that ensure the financial stability and viability of Abode Communities and its affiliates. 5. Ensures that the all aspects of the organization’s risk exposure is in correlation with its charitable purpose and within acceptable industry standards; ensures that the organization maintains appropriate safe guards and systems to manage its risk; advise senior management on risk management issues; and periodically review and make recommendations for policy or procedural changes to minimize the organization’s risk exposure to the President and board of directors. 6. Represent the owner and provide asset management oversight to ensure financial performance and long-term viability of the organization’s portfolio and compliance with all financial commitments and regulatory requirements of the investors and lenders; and develop and execute year fifteen limited partner exit strategies for properties reaching the end of their compliance period. 7. Analyze financial performance of the real estate portfolio and develop solutions as necessary to stabilize operations of individual properties as required. 8. Provide technical advice and assistance in the syndication of low income housing tax credit transactions including perform financial analysis, manage capital contributions from the investors, and prepare and submit tax related documents for investors and government agencies; and plan and execute termination and exit strategies for various limited partnerships. 9. Oversees all aspects of human resources and personnel management, and ensure effective implementation of the office management and information systems. 10. Carry out other duties as required to further Abode Communities’ mission in the provision of affordable rental housing. Required Qualifications and Experience: 1. Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance and 10 – 15 years demonstrated experience related to finance and/or real estate, property management and tax accounting, preferably using the low income housing tax credit and/or in the affordable housing and property management field. Masters in Business Administration or Certification as a Public Accountant is desirable. 2. Five to eight years experience in a supervisory position; strong management, administrative, and financial management skills; ability to function effectively in high-pressure situations. 3. Familiarity with government housing programs and regulatory requirements. 4. Well-organized and detail oriented, displaying excellent analytical skills and problem-solving abilities. 5. Enthusiasm and team building spirit; understanding of housing and community development needs of low-income people. 6. Strong verbal communication skills and clear writing ability; expertise in working with computer programs such as Microsoft Word, Excel, Access and Outlook and comparable accounting software such as Yardi, MRI and Boston Post. 7. Valid California driver's license and availability of an insured vehicle to travel within the Abode Communities service area. Vehicle must meet Abode Communities’ insurance requirements. Compensation: The salary is commensurate with experience.
