Federal Update: Include investments in affordable homes in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act

Low-income families in California are facing unprecedented hardship and homelessness is increasing as job losses and foreclosures increase.

The investment in the production of affordable homes meets the needs of struggling families and creates jobs and stimulates the economy.

Due to the work of national housing advocates including SCANPH, the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act now includes $16 billion in affordable housing investments.

However, the provisions included so far are not adequate to stimulate the production of the more than 30,000 affordable homes that would be starting construction this year and generating more than 37,000 jobs in California but for the collapse of our financial markets.

We need your help today! Today, Thursday, January 22, the Senate will begin deliberations on the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act.

Now is our chance to make change happen! We need you to send faxes and make phone calls to our Senators, Dianne Feinstein and Barbara Boxer - and urge their help in including provisions to adequately stimulate affordable homes in California!
