Community Development Specialist
The California Coalition for Rural Housing (CCRH) is seeking to fill the full-time salaried position of Community Development Specialist in its Sacramento office. This exciting position provides a rare opportunity for the successful candidate to combine technical assistance work in rural housing and community development. The position requires knowledge of affordable housing and community development issues and some technological background. Experience with the operation of Geographical Information Systems (GIS) technologies is preferred.
CCRH is a 30-year old, nonprofit housing advocacy organization, one of the oldest statewide coalitions in the country. Through advocacy, organizing, research, and technical assistance, our goal is to make the case for housing improvement for low-income and rural Californians and strengthen the capacity of the nonprofit and public sectors to provide affordable housing and related facilities. Members are primarily community-based nonprofit and public developers, including the largest self-help housing producers in the U.S., as well as local government officials and local activists concerned about quality of life.
The primary duties of this position are the provision of technical assistance and training support to rural communities throughout California. These duties include affordable housing research and advocacy, policy research and analysis, training and technical assistance to both local governments and grassroots community-based organizations as well as support for other staff activities. In addition, the Community Development Specialist will conduct and coordinate specific, GIS mapping in support of these activities, as needed. Secondary duties will consist of assisting rural communities, nonprofit organizations and other community stakeholders employ GIS technologies in support of affordable housing and community development activities such as housing needs assessments, neighborhood planning, land inventories, production of funding applications, infrastructure mapping, site assessments and other related activities. Specific duties will depend on the background and experience of the candidate selected for the position, is negotiable and may be phased in over the course of employment.
Qualifications:
The successful candidate for this multi-faceted position must be able to work independently and enjoy working as a team member to complete a variety of diverse projects.
•At least 2 years of experience in affordable housing, community development, social services, social policy, or a closely related field. College coursework may be substituted
•A minimum of a Bachelors degree in urban planning, public policy, social work, community development, or a related field with a Master degree highly desirable
•Strong technological skill set and aptitude
•Good analytical and writing skills
•Travel, use of a car, and a valid driver's license are required for this position
•Strong interpersonal skills and ability to work effectively in culturally diverse situations
•Very organized, flexible, and capable of working in a multi-tasking environment
The Community Development Specialist is an exempt position. Salary is competitive and depends on qualifications. Retirement, health and dental benefits, vacation, sick leave, and holiday pay are provided according to the personnel plan.
A car is needed for this position. Reimbursement of work-related travel expenses is provided.
