Job/Life Coach

Lamp Community is an innovative Los Angeles based nonprofit organization that permanently ends homelessness improves health and builds self-sufficiency among men and women living with severe mental illness and co-occurring disorders.

The Job/Life Coach will help homeless and formerly homeless individuals living with severe mental illness obtain supported or independent employment and/or achieve self-identified goals related to job development, educational enhancement or volunteering.

Description: Mentor, coach and provide one-on-one job and educational development, placement and retention services for approximately 38 persons. Serve on interdisciplinary team. Customize employment strategies to each person’s interests and choice. Search for jobs with participants, help them obtain full or part-time employment, and provide follow-along support. Identify and explore both traditional and non-traditional job and volunteer opportunities. Help individuals with limited work histories build confidence by focusing on strengths and providing support and encouragement that will lead to patterns of success. Develop and implement strategies if symptoms of mental illness and/or substance inhibit a person’s job performance. Meet with treatment teams routinely to share information and problem-solve.

Develop successful partnerships with local employers and employee groups. Maintain collaborative relationships with Department of Rehabilitation and other community human service agencies for referral and recruiting. Facilitate job fairs at agency’s housing and service sites. Coordinate workshops for job seekers on topics such as resume writing, interviewing, effective networking and working while on SSI/SSDI. Coordinate with team or provide job-related support services such as transportation, assistance with daily living skills, housing placement/stability and physical and mental health care. Maintain accurate and up-to-date documentation and report on each individual’s progress and outcomes. Report to Job/Life Manager.

Requirements: BA. Minimum 3 years related experience serving persons with severe mental illness and co-occurring disorders. Creative, flexible, self-starter who can think “outside the box” to create meaningful job, educational and other opportunities for individuals living with a mental illness. Excellent advocacy, interpersonal and relationship building skills. Demonstrated experience with community mental health, psychosocial rehabilitation, harm reduction and/or permanent supportive housing. Ability to write clearly and concisely.

Strong organizational, administrative, and case management skills. Bilingual English/Spanish a plus. Solid computer skills, including Microsoft Word, Outlook, Excel and internet research. Ability to thrive in a fast-paced work environment and meet deadlines. Experience with job placement/staffing, job training, or adult learning helpful but not required.
