LA Voice and Housing Los Angeles Townhall Meeting Draws Over 1000 Community Members

LA Voice Townhall Meeting

On Monday July 16th Housing LA joined members of LA VOICE and more than a 1,000 Hollywood and faith based community members for a People of Faith Town Hall Meeting. The purpose of the meeting was to highlight the rising costs of living in Los Angeles and to push our city leaders to act now in supporting Housing LA's 3-Point-Plan to solve our city's housing crisis. Those in attendance included Deputy Mayor, Helmi Hisserich, City Council President Eric Garcetti and Mercedes Marquez from the Housing Department.

More than 150 congregational members from East LA and Venice joined members and clergy leaders from the Church of the Blessed Sacrament, Hollywood 7th Day Adventist, Hollywood United Methodist Church and St. Steven's Episcopal Church to demand that immediate action be taken to preserve affordable housing at risk in Hollywood and to increase tenant education.

After the hearing the personal testimony from three LA VOICE members about their current struggle to find affordable housing, Councilman Garcetti and Deputy Mayor Hisserich committed to work with LA VOICE and Housing LA in identifying permanent revenue sources for the Housing Trust Fund and towards Los Angeles’ own mixed-income housing program. Mercedes Marquez also committed to work with LA VOICE in dramatically increasing the Housing Department’s role educating tenants throughout the city about their housing rights.

LA VOICE is an active member of Housing LA and plans to follow-up on this successful event have already begun.  For more information on how you can get involved in the Housing LA campaign, please contact Francesca at 213-480-1249 or email at fdelarosa@scanph.org.
