Center for American Progress Holds Forum on Housing Crisis

On August 15, the Center for American Progress (CAP), which has been an instrumental catalyst for many of the Obama Administration's policy initiatives, hosted a forum titled “Home for Good: It’s Time to Talk about Housing” to identify key issues in the ongoing housing crisis and discuss potential solutions.

Mapping Low-Income Housing Tax Credit Properties

A new online service allows people to map low-income housing tax credit (LIHTC) properties placed in service between 1987 and 2009. The free program was created by Novogradac and Company, and draws upon Department of Housing and Urban Development data of 33,000 LIHTC properties and almost 2,203,000 housing units. The data may be searched by city, county, Congressional district, state legislative district, and Census tract. Link here.

Menorah Housing Foundation wins 2012 MetLife Foundation Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing

(Los Angeles, CA – 07/27/2012) – Menorah Housing Foundation today received a 2012 MetLife Foundation Award for Excellence in Affordable Housing for its work with Long Beach Senior Housing in Long Beach, CA.  Presented by Enterprise Community Partners, Inc., and MetLife Foundation, the award honors Menorah Housing Foundation’s outstanding leadership, innovation, effectiveness and quality operations and services in the area of affordable senior housing.  The award also recognizes the organization for successfully incorporating green components in their housing.

Merritt Community Capital Corp. Opens Southern California Office

LOS ANGELES, CA, July 10, 2012 – Merritt Community Capital Corp. has opened a Southern California office in downtown Los Angeles. Merritt is based in Oakland, California and is the only California-focused nonprofit housing credit syndicator in the state. Since 1998, Merritt has invested in 11 affordable housing properties in Southern California creating or preserving nearly 700 units of affordable housing across six Southern California counties.

Whittall-Scherfee Appointed Deputy Director of Financial Assistance

Laura Whittall-Scherfee has been appointed by Governor Jerry Brown to serve as the Deputy Director of Financial Assistance at the Department of Housing and Community Development (HCD). Whittall-Scherfee has over twenty-five years of experience in commercial, multifamily and residential mortgage lending, program development and program management.

UNIDAD Coalition Affordable Housing Grant Program

UNIDAD Coalition proudly announces the availability of grant funds through a newly established Affordable Housing Grant Program. This program offers grants to 501(c)(3) nonprofits engaged in developing affordable housing units in South Los Angeles. The grant funds are aimed at supporting nonprofits who are working to address the housing needs of low-income tenants by proving readily available capital for projects that will result in the development of new, or the preservation of existing, affordable housing opportunities.

HUD Study Describes the Housing Problems of Those with Disabilities

(from Memo to Members of the NLIHC) A study recently released by HUD website demonstrates a positive correlation between rent burden and the incidence of disabilities among respondents to HUD’s American Housing Survey (AHS). The study was initiated because, for the first time, the AHS included the same six questions regarding disabilities that are used in the American Community Survey (ACS), the Current Population Survey (CPS), and the Survey of Income and Program Participation (SIPP).
